Both of the huge computer manufacturers Acer and Asus have decided to hold back on new mini laptops.

At long last the companies have come to the conclusion that it doesn’t make sense to launch even more netbooks based on the same architecture, which includes the Intel Atom N270/N280 processor with the built-in GMA950 graphics. In other words, there will be no new Eee PC or Aspire One models this year.

Instead they will hold back until the next big upgrade from Intel starts shipping – the “Pine Trail-M” platform, which offers better performance, power savings and graphics integrated into the actual  processor silicon. These upgraded parts are most likely ready for launch already, but trustworthy sources speculate that Intel is delaying partly because of the current economical climate, but also to wait for large existing inventories to deplete.

Acer and Asus are quite possibly none-too happy about the whole situation and have simply decided to stop making new models until Intel gives the go-ahead for Pine Trail. it was initially scheduled for September, but according to the latest announcement from Intel, manufacturers and consumers will have to hold on until early 2010 before they get a glimpse of what the new Atom platform is capable of. Safe to say, there are still plenty of netbooks to choose from as it is.
